The Honest Guide to Backlinks in 2026: What Works, What's Wasted Money

Backlinks still move rankings more than almost anything else — when they're the right kind. Here's how to tell quality links from expensive noise.

Ask ten SEO people about backlinks and you'll get ten contradictory answers. Yet the data hasn't changed much: pages with strong, relevant backlink profiles consistently outrank pages without them. What has changed is what counts as "strong".

Why backlinks still matter

Google's algorithm has hundreds of signals, but links remain one of the loudest. A link from a relevant, trusted site is a public endorsement — and unlike on-page factors, your competitors can't copy your backlink profile overnight.

Backlinks also feed AI visibility. Language models learn which brands are credible partly from who links to and mentions them. Good link building now pays off twice: in rankings and in AI answers.

The quality hierarchy

Not all links are equal. Roughly from most to least valuable:

  1. Editorial links from relevant, high-authority sites — earned mentions in industry publications and news sites.
  2. Niche edits and guest posts on real sites with real traffic — placed content on sites that rank for their own keywords.
  3. High-DA general placements — useful for authority building, weaker for topical relevance.
  4. Directory and citation links — low individual power but essential for local SEO and entity confirmation.
  5. Mass-produced comment/profile spam — worthless at best, harmful at worst. Avoid.

DA/DR is a starting point, not the goal

Domain Authority (Moz) and Domain Rating (Ahrefs) are third-party estimates — Google uses neither. A DR20 site that genuinely covers your industry and gets real visitors will usually beat a DR70 general blog farm. When you evaluate a link opportunity, ask:

  • Does this site rank for keywords in its own niche?
  • Does it have real organic traffic (not just a high DA number)?
  • Would a human plausibly discover and click this link?

Anchor text: the part everyone over-thinks and then gets wrong

A safe modern anchor profile is mostly branded ("EezySEO", "eezyseo.co.za") and natural phrases ("this guide to local SEO"), with exact-match keyword anchors used sparingly — well under 10-15% of new links. Aggressive exact-match anchors are the fastest way to earn a link spam penalty.

Velocity and consistency beat bursts

Twenty quality links spread over five months looks organic. Twenty links landing in one week, then nothing for a year, looks like a campaign. Steady monthly link acquisition — even at a modest volume — outperforms sporadic bursts.

How many links do you actually need?

It depends entirely on your keywords. For most South African local and niche terms, the competition is light: a handful of relevant, quality links per month sustained over 6-12 months is often enough to take page one. Competitive national terms (insurance, finance, travel) demand more — but the same quality rules apply.

The most expensive link is the cheap one that gets your site penalised. The second most expensive is the "premium" one on a site no human ever visits.
