Your Next Customer Won't Google You — They'll Ask an AI. Will It Know Your Name?
AI assistants answer millions of buying questions a day — with a handful of brand names. Here's how brands earn a place in AI answers, and how to measure it.

A growing share of buying journeys now starts — and often ends — inside an AI chat window. "What's a good CRM for a small business?" "Which company can build backlinks for my site?" "Best coffee roaster in Cape Town?" The AI answers with two or three names. If yours isn't one of them, the customer never knew you were an option.
How LLMs decide which brands to mention
Language models don't run auctions and they don't crawl in real time (mostly). They mention brands based on:
- Training data prevalence — how often your brand appears across the web in relevant contexts.
- Consistency — whether the facts about you (what you do, where you operate, who you serve) agree across sources.
- Association strength — how tightly your brand co-occurs with the problem/category words users ask about.
- Retrieval sources — for tools like Perplexity, Bing Copilot and Google AI Overviews, whether your pages are ranked and structured well enough to be pulled in and cited live.
The practical upshot: AI visibility is earned through a deliberate content and mention footprint — not a hack, not a paid placement.
The three layers of AI visibility work
- Foundation: be machine-legible. Clear service descriptions, schema markup, an accurate Google Business Profile, consistent NAP and "about" facts everywhere. LLMs can't recommend what they can't parse.
- Association: own your question space. Publish direct, well-structured answers to the exact questions your buyers ask AI. Comparison pages, honest pricing guides and FAQ content are quoted disproportionately by retrieval-based assistants.
- Corroboration: earn third-party mentions. Press features, directory listings, reviews, guest articles and industry roundups teach models — through many independent sources — that your brand belongs in the answer.
Measuring AI visibility (yes, you can)
Build a prompt panel: 15-25 questions your customers realistically ask, spanning your services, city and industry. Run them monthly through ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and log: Were you mentioned? How were you described? Who else was mentioned? Which sources were cited? Over time this becomes an AI share-of-voice metric — the new rankings report.
What about accuracy and reputation?
Sometimes AI knows your brand but gets it wrong — outdated services, wrong locations, or worse, confusing you with a competitor. Correcting this means fixing the source signals: updating stale pages and profiles, publishing authoritative "canonical" brand facts, and building fresh corroborating mentions until the models' picture of you updates.
Being absent from AI answers costs you customers silently. Being described incorrectly costs you customers and trust.
